Bodegas de Santo Tomás

Founded in 1888 in Baja California, Bodegas de Santo Tomás stands as one of the most historic and respected wineries in Mexican wine history. Widely recognized as the first commercial winery in Baja California, Santo Tomás has played a defining role in shaping the identity and evolution of winemaking in Mexico for more than a century.

The origins of the winery trace back even further, to the late 18th century, when Dominican missionaries planted some of the first vineyards in the region near the Misión Santo Tomás de Aquino. These early vines laid the foundation for what would eventually become the modern Mexican wine industry.

In 1888, Italian entrepreneur Francisco Andonegui and Spanish partner Miguel Ormart formally established the winery as a commercial operation in the Santo Tomás Valley, just south of Ensenada. Combining European winemaking traditions with the unique terroir of Baja California, the winery quickly became a pioneer of viticulture in northwestern Mexico.

Over the decades, Bodegas de Santo Tomás has become synonymous with quality, innovation, and heritage. The winery helped introduce and develop premium grape varietals in Mexico, including Nebbiolo, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, and Grenache, while continuously refining its techniques to elevate Mexican wine onto the international stage.

Today, the winery is internationally recognized for producing elegant wines that reflect the character of Baja California’s Mediterranean climate, coastal influence, and diverse soils. From fresh whites to structured reds and refined blends, Santo Tomás wines showcase the balance between tradition and modern winemaking excellence.

Beyond its wines, Bodegas de Santo Tomás represents a cultural landmark within Ensenada and the wider Baja California wine region. Its historic cellars and legacy buildings have become part of the cultural heritage of the region, symbolizing over 130 years of continuous dedication to Mexican viticulture.

As one of the pioneering forces behind the rise of Mexican wine, Bodegas de Santo Tomás continues to lead with passion, craftsmanship, and a deep respect for its history — proudly carrying the legacy of Baja California winemaking into the future.
